How Much Does Custom Software Development Cost in India? What Really Drives the Price
By the Fulgid engineering team ·
The honest answer: it depends on six things
Any company that quotes a price before understanding your project is guessing. The cost of custom software is the cost of the team's time, and time is driven by a small number of factors you can reason about before you ever ask for a quote. Here is how we think about it at Fulgid, after more than 150 projects since 2013.
1. Scope: roles, workflows and screens
The biggest driver is how many different kinds of users the system has and how many workflows each one runs. An internal tool for one team with three workflows is a very different build from a platform with customers, staff, admins and approvers, each with their own dashboards and permissions.
2. Platforms
A web application, an Android app and an iOS app are three front ends. Cross-platform frameworks such as Flutter let one codebase serve both mobile platforms, which reduces cost and time, but every extra platform still adds design, testing and release work.
3. Integrations
Payment gateways like Razorpay, accounting systems like Zoho Books, broker APIs for trading platforms, WhatsApp Business API, government systems: each integration has its own documentation, sandbox, edge cases and approval process. Integrations are where estimates most often go wrong, so name all of them up front.
4. AI features
Adding a call to a language model is quick. Making AI reliable in production is not: retrieval over your own documents (RAG), evaluation, guardrails against wrong answers, cost control and monitoring all take engineering time. Ask whether a quote includes them.
5. Security, compliance and scale
Audit trails, role-based access, data retention rules, GST handling, uptime targets and expected load all add work. A government or healthcare system with sensitive records needs more of this than a marketing site.
6. Support after launch
Hosting, monitoring, security updates and small changes continue after go-live. Budget for them from the start instead of treating launch as the finish line.
Where Fulgid's pricing starts
For a small, well-defined web application, our projects start under ₹1 lakh. From there the price follows scope: every extra user role, platform, integration or AI feature adds time, and time is what you pay for. We give a free estimate once we understand what you need, and a fixed quote with milestones when the scope is clear.
Realistic timelines by project type
Because cost follows time, timelines are the most useful planning number. These are the ranges we see on our own projects:
| Project type | Typical timeline |
|---|---|
| Simple website or landing page | 1–3 weeks |
| Standard web application or e-commerce store | 4–8 weeks |
| Custom SaaS platform or AI-integrated system | 2–5 months |
| Complex fintech or multi-module enterprise platform | 4–8 months |
A realistic timeline up front is worth more than an optimistic one that slips. If a quote is much shorter than these ranges for a similar scope, ask what has been left out.
Fixed price or time & material?
- Fixed price suits well-defined projects with a clear scope. You get a fixed quote with milestones and deliverables, and payments are tied to those milestones.
- Time & material suits evolving products and ongoing work. You pay for the hours or sprints actually used, and can change priorities as you learn.
For fixed-price work at Fulgid, a 40–50% advance is typical before work begins, with the rest tied to milestone deliveries and the final payment on completion and handover. When a new requirement comes up mid-project, it goes through a written change request with its impact on cost and timeline, and nothing is added without your approval.
Why India-based development costs less, and what not to compromise on
Rates for experienced Indian teams are significantly lower than for agencies in the US, UK or Australia, for the same quality bar. The saving is real, but choosing purely on hourly rate is a mistake. Check that the price includes project management, UI/UX design, testing, deployment and documentation, and that you will own the source code and have repository access from day one.
How to get an estimate you can trust
- Write down your users, their main workflows and every system the software must connect to.
- Separate must-haves for launch from things that can follow later.
- Ask for a scope document covering features, architecture, tech stack, timeline and cost, not just a number.
- For large or uncertain projects, consider a short paid discovery and scoping phase first. It makes the estimate accurate rather than optimistic.
- Ask what support looks like after launch, and what it costs.
